Welcome to Minding Her Business! Get to know your favourite content creators and learn how they turned their social media into their business.
Meet full-time content creator, Allysa Larson!
How did you get into content creation and what kind of content do you focus on?
I have always loved fashion and I wanted to document and share my outfits so creating content started as a hobby and eventually turned full time! I focus on fashion & beauty.
When did you feel ready to make the jump to being a full-time creator?
The stars kind of aligned and I began to take it more seriously when I realized my 9-5 wasn't what I wanted to pursue anymore. I had saved money so that I would feel comfortable to make the leap, and when my job let me go (I knew it was coming), I was confident and ready to do content creation full time. I've never looked back and it was the best decision ever.
What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
It's so cliche, but to not care what other people think and to pursue what makes you happy. Don't let fear hold you back because at the end of the day, you're the one responsible for your life. You're going to be your biggest cheerleader!!
What are the best & most challenging parts of being a content creator?
BEST -
You are your own boss, you create your own schedule, you determine how much you make, work remotely, so many opportunities, meeting like minded creators, the community of fellow creators and building a relationship with your audience.
MOST CHALLENGING -
Being your own boss, working 24/7 (capricorn here) and trying to find balance. You run your own business (pitching, invoices, tracking money, editing, posting, etc...), not being paid every two weeks, there's no rules out there so you have to figure it out! Thank goodness there are more resources out there now.
What are your primary revenue streams as a creator?
Definitely Instagram & Tiktok.
What are your must-have for running your creator business?
Editing apps (InShot for reels, Lightroom for photos, Preview for planning the feed), MYB Planner and some good pens, Flyfin for tax organization.
Why did you take the MYB course?
I think transparency is SO important in the industry and I really wanted to learn about rates and pitching so that I would be setting myself up for success and not selling myself short.
If you were to manifest your dream partnership, what would it be?
It's crazy to think about how many dream partnerships have come true since I've started, but right now, I would love to build relationships with designer brands (Dior, Givenchy, Fendi, Gucci, Chanel, Prada)... DREAMIN' BIG!
Tell us about a “pinch-me moment” in your journey so far?
A few pinch me moments would be: Getting a long term brand deal with one of my favorite hair tool brands, getting invited to go on a brand trip to Catalina, hitting 100k, working with my dream brands in a paid capacity (college me would be screaming).
What’s one #MYBTIP you can share with our community?
Consistency is key and it's all about the journey. When one door closes, another will open. Keep going if it's what you're truly passionate about!
